Pdf Summary
The 2026 Green Fleet Webinar Series highlighted practical approaches to improving fleet sustainability through change management, alternative fuels, data, and right-sizing.

Harris County Universal Services Fleet Services described a change-management framework built around awareness, desire, knowledge, ability, and reinforcement. To move from a backlog of initiatives to focused execution, the team prioritizes projects by comparing their value and effort, then uses tools such as design thinking, the Five Whys, fishbone diagrams, and bow-tie analysis. Key barriers include customer preferences, limited availability of suitable replacement vehicles, and charging capacity across a large service area. The county addresses these through communication, demonstrations, training, stakeholder engagement, partnerships, infrastructure investment, pilots, and recognition of successful work. Examples include shared EV cargo vans, keyless driving, and solar-powered charging.

The District of Columbia Department of Public Works presented an integrated approach to alternative-fuel adoption: acquire cleaner vehicles, provide fueling and charging, measure performance, and right-size the fleet. Its standardized purchasing process prioritizes hybrid and electric options, requires justification for gas vehicles when cleaner alternatives exist, and checks charging availability before orders are placed. The District supports its fleet with biodiesel, 12 fueling sites, mobile tankers, and 300 EV charging stations, with Level 3 charging planned. Telematics and emissions reports guide operational decisions, while underused vehicles are reassigned and aging assets retired.

The presentations emphasized making cleaner choices the default, matching fuel technology to vehicle duty cycles, and using data to avoid unnecessary purchases. The webinar also recognized the City of Fort Lauderdale Fleet Services as a 2026 Green Fleet winner and referenced its garage renovation, patrol fleet transformation, and right-sizing work.
