Pdf Summary
The 2026 Green Fleet Webinar Series featured strategies from the City of Long Beach, the University of California system and UCLA, and PITT OHIO.

Long Beach reported that, excluding public-safety vehicles, 71% of its fleet uses alternative fuels: 39% are battery-electric or hybrid, and 32% run on renewable natural gas. The city has installed more than 172 fleet charging ports and is building additional infrastructure. To bridge delays between vehicle delivery and permanent charging, it deployed a mobile charging trailer; it also added 58 zero-emission vehicles, including two electric refuse trucks. Fleet travel fell by about 106,500 miles year over year. Policies, telematics, utilization reviews, staff training, and sustainable garage practices support the city’s efforts.

The UC and UCLA presentation emphasized that fleet electrification is a management and collaboration challenge, not simply a vehicle-purchasing decision. Its framework proceeds through policy review, fleet assessment, readiness analysis, infrastructure planning, procurement, governance, and optimization. Operational needs such as payload, routes, range, and vehicle availability must guide decisions. UCLA is expanding electric buses, trucks, shuttles, and other vehicles, while the UC system shares knowledge to reduce duplicated effort. Key lessons include planning infrastructure early, using data, and establishing clear governance.

PITT OHIO described a gradual commercial-fleet transition that began in 2022. By 2026, it had 13 electric on-road vehicles, alongside electric forklifts and yard tractors. Annual EV mileage grew from about 20,900 miles in 2022 to nearly 126,000 by the third quarter of 2026. The company plans further expansion and recommends a “crawl, walk, run” approach built on strong partnerships and teamwork.

Across the presentations, successful fleet decarbonization depends on aligning vehicles, infrastructure, operations, policy, financing, and workforce engagement.
