Video Summary
In this final session of a three-part series, Andy Campbell of Sourcewell introduced Craig Krohner from the City of Glendale, Arizona, to continue discussing technician recruitment and retention. Craig recapped Glendale’s approach from earlier sessions: improving tool allowances, offering ASE certification incentives, partnering with trade schools, creating career ladders, and conducting a job study to support reclassification and budgeting.

He then explained Glendale’s new employee alignment model, which expanded the fleet shop from four classifications to eight. The city created clearer progression paths: fleet mechanic, fleet technician, journeyman technician, and fleet journeyman lead. These roles were defined by experience, certifications, and skill level, helping trade school graduates enter the field and giving current employees a visible path for advancement.

Craig also detailed how Glendale worked closely with HR to revise job descriptions, build defensible pay-grade recommendations, and prepare for the organizational impact of reclassification. Employees had to reapply for their jobs, so HR provided interview and resume training to reduce anxiety and support the transition.

Finally, Craig emphasized celebrating employee success through recognition events and team cookouts, reinforcing morale and servant leadership. He closed by encouraging public fleet professionals to continue learning, sharing ideas, and using Sourcewell as a resource.
